I am about to introduce you to a a special person, “Perumal Murugan”, Novelist, Book Author, Writer, Poet and so on. One of his masterpieces, “Madhorubagan (“One Part Woman” in English)”, made him popular worldwide.

1. Why “Madhorubagan” is so special?
It is the story of how the society treats a couple childless for 12 years and the mental struggles of the loving couple. Fueled by the then-existent practice/festival that involves having sex with unknown men being considered as God themselves giving them child, the story revolves around whether to yield to this practice or not.
The practice is not in existence anymore. But it was true that there had been such a practice and it was documented too. “Madhorubagan” is special for coming up with a story set in the backdrop of a time period where people had to struggle a lot in the name of traditional practices. The Author questions the then-existent practices in his own way, giving us a picture to image how it would be to hurt someone’s feelings through tradition. It tells us that the Society has always found its way to destroy people, not matter what.
2. Why “Perumal Murugan” is an inspiration?
“Perumal Murugan”, author of “Madhorubagan” should have been celebrated for such a fine work and his research works with the non-existent practice. What happened? The Hindu Society stood up against Perumal Murugan saying there was no such practice in the past and Madhorubagan tries to defame Hinduism. They knocked on the doors of High Court and Supreme Court for “Justice”. And the judgment favored Perumal Murugan.
It Stated as follows: “It is the right of a reader to choose what to read and what not to read”.
Out of agony, Perumal Murugan, even after getting a favorable judgment, declared, “ ‘Author’ Perumal Murugan is Dead”.
Much to our surprise, now he has come back with two new works of his own style after years. Yes he is an inspiration. He fought for Justice, got a favorable judgment. He never gave up his struggle to release his book. He remained silent till the judgment. That is what made him the special and an inspiration. Good to see that still Pen is mightier than the sword.
3. Why I call it a “Confused Society”?
We need to provide the space to the artists to come up with the at most beauty of their works. Be it a movie, or a book, or a poem, or any kind of art work. We must protect the space of artists at all cost. But India fails. Even none came forward to publish “Gujarat Files” by Rana Ayyub.
Is it the backward people who are trying to limit the space of artists or is it the people who wants to exercise power and authority over people in the name of Religion? It has always been the latter ones: the national threats.
This is not the scenario of a particular region. It is the complete picture of the whole India. Politics in the name of Religion is everywhere across the Sub-continent. Food Politics, Education Politics, Language Politics, Region Politics and all other politics happen in India through Religion Politics. All this tell us that we need more people like Perumal Murugan and more books like Madhorubagan.
